Shrine of Saint Philomena: the contemporary artwork dedicated to Blessed   Pauline Marie Jaricot

It was inaugurated on 26 May 2024, at the Shrine of Saint Philomena, the artwork by master Prisco De Vivo dedicated to Blessed Pauline Marie Jaricot.

The new chapel represents a further piece in the rich history of faith and devotion that characterizes Mugnano del Cardinale; it offers the faithful a place of prayer and reflection dedicated to the French mystic and blessed, to her extraordinary witness of faith.

Pauline Jaricot arrives in Mugnano on 8 August 1835, two days before the feast of Saint Philomena. Although she is prey to atrocious suffering, she is welcomed with joy as founder of the Propagation of the Faith and of the Living Rosary. On Sunday, she is placed near the venerated tomb, while she seems to be almost dead.

Pauline prayed for three days seated on a chair before the Body of Saint Philomena.

According to Sister Cecilia Giacovelli, Pauline "understands that she has just been the object of a divine miracle. Clapping her hands in a rhythmic motion, Pauline intones the Glory be to the Father. The pallor of her face gives way to her natural complexion: she leaves behind the look of an emaciated fifty-year-old to offer the image of a woman at least fifteen years younger, who manages to walk freely through the crowd with surprising liveliness” (Sr Cecilia Giacovelli, Pauline Jaricot. Biographie, op. cit., p. 202).

It is precisely to Pauline Jaricot, healed by the intercession of Saint Philomena, named blessed by Pope Francis on 22 May 2022, that master Prisco De Vivo dedicates this work, the first work with a contemporary figurative layout, made in Italy:  “a retablo composed of three painted panels, as is typical of the genre, recalling her face and her devotion, framed within a luminous blue. Stylistic hallmark and space of the soul together. Beloved blessedness”.

The artist explains the reason for this choice:

“In making it, for me there was a true state of grace, a state of grace, helped by prayer, led me to work on the face of the blessed, which radiates a disarming sweetness, like the appearance of that square that contains her face, which is born on a cloud; a face that aligns with the grace of the Virgin Mary, with the clarity of the sky, with that gold that brings the Holy Rosary to the eyes of God, with the chair, symbol of the miracle that occurred through the intercession of Saint Philomena.

The light on the canvas is the reflection of the divine light that guided the entire existence of the Blessed, born into a wealthy family, yet lived in poverty by her religious choice. The flashes of light symbolize the eternity of the Gospel message, which guides thousands of faithful to favor the values of faith over the vanity of material goods.

“I had already created numerous works whose subject was stories, faces of mystics and saints, and yet Pauline Marie was calling me, just as when my wife and I decided to take a home next to the Shrine of Saint Philomena in Mugnano del Cardinale. Today I know it was no coincidence.”

The cult of Saint Philomena grows in charm and mystery, thinking again of the miracle worked upon the illness of Pauline Marie Jaricot who, once healed, was able to devote body and soul to the Catholic missions spread throughout the world. Devotion and deep spirituality.

Two examples of faith  and dedication to the cause of Christianity, symbols of strength and courage. Saint Philomena is venerated as a martyr who kept her faith until death; Pauline Jaricot devoted her life to promoting the Catholic faith and missions.

Two examples of women who, with their spiritual values, filled the void of an existence centered on money and wealth: Blessed Pauline Marie Jaricot, born to a wealthy family of silk workers in Lyon, and Saint Philomena, the beautiful princess of the island of Corfu.

Both, with smile and humility, placed their existence in the hands of Jesus.

Sanctuary of Saint Philomena: Inauguration of contemporary artwork dedicated to Blessed   Pauline Marie Jaricot

The work of art by maestro Prisco De Vivo dedicated to Blessed Pauline Marie Jaricot was inaugurated on 26 May 2024 at the Sanctuary of Saint Philomena.

The new chapel is another chapter in the rich history of faith and devotion that characterises Mugnano del Cardinale; it offers the faithful a place of prayer and reflection dedicated to the French mystic and blessed, and to her extraordinary witness of faith.

Pauline Jaricot arrived in Mugnano on 8 August 1835, two days before the feast of Saint Philomena. Despite being in excruciating pain, she is joyfully welcomed as the foundress of the Propagation of the Faith and the Living Rosary. On Sunday, she is placed near the venerated tomb, while appearing to be almost dead.

Pauline prayed for three days sitting on a chair before the body of St Philomena.

According to Sister Cecilia Giacovelli, Pauline "realised that she had just been the object of a divine miracle. Clapping her hands in a rhythmic movement, Pauline intones the Glory Be to the Father. The pallor of her face gives way to her natural complexion: she leaves behind the appearance of an emaciated fifty-year-old woman to offer the image of a woman at least fifteen years younger, who can walk freely through the crowd with surprising vivacity' (Sr Cecilia Giacovelli, Pauline Jaricot. Biographie, op. cit., p. 202).

It is precisely to Pauline Jaricot, miraculously blessed through the intercession of Saint Philomena, proclaimed Blessed by Pope Francis on 22 May 2022, that master Prisco De Vivo dedicates this work, the first work with a contemporary figurative layout, executed in Italy: "a retable composed of three painted compartments, as is typical of the genre, recalling her face and devotion, framed within a luminous blue. Stylistic cipher and soul space together. Beloved bliss'.

The artist explains the reason for this choice:

"In the realisation for me there was a true state of grace, a state of grace, aided by prayer, led me to work on the face of the blessed one, who emanates a disarming sweetness, like the appearance of that square containing her face, which is born on a cloud; a face that conforms to the grace of the Virgin Mary, to the clarity of the sky, to that gold that brings the Holy Rosary to the eyes of God, to the chair that symbolises the miracle that took place through the intercession of Saint Philomena.

The light on the canvas is a reflection of the divine light that guided the entire existence of the Blessed, who had a rich family, but lived in poverty because of her religious choice. The flashes of light symbolise the eternity of the Gospel message, which guides thousands of believers to privilege the values of faith over the vanity of material goods.

"I had already created numerous works with stories, faces of mystics and saints as their subjects, yet Pauline Marie was calling me, just as she did when my wife and I decided to take a house next to the Sanctuary of Saint Philomena in Mugnano del Cardinale. Today I know it was no accident."

The cult of Saint Philomena grows in fascination and mystery, thinking back to the miracle worked on the illness of Pauline Marie Jaricot who, once cured, was able to dedicate herself body and soul to the Catholic missions around the world. Deep devotion and spirituality.

Two examples of faith and dedication to the cause of Christianity, symbols of strength and courage. St Philomena is venerated as a martyr who kept her faith until death, Pauline Jaricot dedicated her life to promoting the Catholic faith and missions.

Two examples of women whose spiritual values filled the void of an existence centred on money and wealth: Blessed Pauline Marie Jaricot, born into a wealthy family of silk workers in Lyon, and Saint Philomena, the beautiful princess from the island of Corfu.

Both, with a smile and humility, placed their lives in the hands of Jesus.

No domingo, é colocada junto do túmulo venerado, aparentando estar quase morta.

O artista explica a razão desta escolha:
